The holidays are wonderful and they are also a mess. Extra people, extra food, extra decorations, and a solid two weeks where regular cleaning gets skipped in favor of family and travel. January in Lakeland is the perfect time to hit reset — the humidity is low, the tourist rush hasn't started, and the house is quiet again.
Here's the post-holiday reset we recommend to every Polk County client. It's designed to be doable in a single weekend, or bookable as a one-time deep clean if you'd rather spend the weekend at Bok Tower Gardens.
Step 1: Un-deck the halls (all of it)
- Take down decorations, string lights, and wreaths. Wipe dust off ornaments before boxing — a damp microfiber saves you the same job next December.
- Vacuum inside every storage bin before repacking. Palmetto bugs love a warm attic full of cardboard.
- Store bins on shelves off the floor. Lakeland attics and garages get muggy fast.
Step 2: The 20-minute declutter
Walk through with three bags: donate, trash, relocate. Set a timer for 20 minutes per room. Don't reorganize — that's a different job. Just get the surface volume down.
- Kitchen: expired pantry items, holiday leftovers still lurking in the fridge.
- Kids' rooms: broken toys, gift packaging, outgrown clothes.
- Living room: catalogs, dead batteries, holiday cards you've already read.
- Bedrooms: gift wrap, receipts, anything that landed on the dresser "temporarily" in December.
Step 3: Deep clean the high-traffic zones
Kitchen reset
- Empty the fridge and wipe every shelf with warm water + baking soda.
- Run the oven's self-clean cycle overnight. Wipe the inside of the microwave and stovetop.
- Degrease cabinet fronts around the stove and handles — holiday cooking leaves an invisible film.
- Change the water filter and clean the coffee maker with a vinegar cycle.
Bathroom reset
- Scrub grout with an oxygen-bleach paste. Re-caulk any dark seams.
- Empty vanity drawers, wipe them out, toss expired products.
- Wash shower curtains and bath mats.
- Replace toothbrushes and razors — start the year fresh.
Living areas
- Vacuum under couch cushions and along baseboards.
- Wipe ceiling-fan blades and light fixtures — dust accumulates fast when AC ran nonstop through Christmas cooking.
- Wash throw blankets and swap heavier holiday textiles for lighter early-Florida-spring layers.
Step 4: Reset your cleaning routine for the year
The single biggest predictor of a clean house in July is whether you established a rhythm in January. Pick one:
- Weekly self-clean, monthly pro touch-up — best for small homes and disciplined humans.
- Bi-weekly recurring service — what most of our Lakeland clients settle on. Best value.
- Weekly recurring — best for families with kids, pets, and busy schedules.
